Did you know that Oat Milk is all the rage right now?  And it's no wonder!  Oat Milk is simple, creamy, healthy, and cheap!  Here are some simple step by step instructions on how to make delicious oat milk in your own kitchen in just a few minutes!

To make oat milk, all you really need is two ingredients: oats and water.  Blend those two together and you've got milk!  There are however, just a few things you should know before starting out on your oat milk adventure!

    Oat Milk Tips:

    1. You gotta soak the oats!  Soaking (30 minutes) and rinsing the oats after soaking helps remove a strong 'oat' flavor, as well as keeping the milk from being 'slimy'.
    2. Don't over-blend!  A few oat chunks are ok, you're going to strain it anyway!
    3. Keep it cold!  Use cold water for soaking, rinsing, and blending.

    Optional Oat Milk Add-ins:

    • sweetener (agave, maple syrup, coconut sugar, pitted dates)
    • vanilla extract
    • cocoa powder

    How to Make Oat Milk:

First, measure ½ cup of oats into a small bowl and cover with cool water.  Let soak for 30 minutes.  Then rinse oats under cool running water.

Add oats and three cups purified water to blender.  Add any other optional add-ins (sweetener, cocoa, or flavoring).  Blend for about 30 seconds or until mostly smooth.

Pour oat milk into nut milk bag and strain.  If you don't have a nut milk bag you can use a clean tea towel, cheesecloth, or basic fine strainer.  If you opt to use a strainer, go ahead and strain your milk 2-3 times to remove most of the sediment.

Milk the nut milk bag, gently squeezing it to get all the oat milk out.  Save the oat pulp that is inside the bag and use it in smoothies, crackers, oatmeal, or whatever else you dream up!

Congratulations!  You've created delicious oat milk!  Taste it to see what you think!  It's insanely healthy and pure and completely amazing.  But, if you want to take it to ANOTHER level, here's a tip:

I've noticed that a lot of the leading brand non-dairy milk companies add a little oil to their milk.  I'm assuming that this is to simulate the fattiness that we are accustomed to in traditional dairy milk.  I decided to try this recently with my oat milk, and I loved the result.

Here's what you do:  Pour your freshly made oat milk back into the blender.  Put the lid on the blender and turn it on to at least medium speed.  Put two teaspoons of a neutral flavored oil (flaxseed, rapeseed, canola, vegetable oil) into a measuring cup or beaker that you can easily pour from.  Remove the blender plug, and pour in the oil super slowly while the blender is going.  When you're done, you're done!  Switch it off and taste test your upgraded oat milk.

How long does oat milk last?

You can keep your oat milk in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to five days.  Shake it up before you use it as it has a  tendency to separate some over time.

    Can oat milk be heated?

Oat milk can be used in cooking or baking, and many people enjoy oat milk in their hot coffee.  Oat milk does not curdle in coffee or other hot drinks and works well when used as a milk substitute in cooking or baking.

    Is oat milk gluten-free?

If you are sensitive to gluten, be sure to use gluten-free oats, and your milk will be gluten-free!

Hello, I’m an Industrial Design student at Loughborough University. My final year project is based around improving the process of making oat milk at home. I need to ask a few questions to people who have made their own oat milk at home, or do so regularly! If you’re able to spare a few minutes of your time, I would really appreciate it if you would be able to answer some questions and share your experiences on making oat milk ? thank you!
